The most recent standard ACI 318‑19 redefines the long-term relation for the determination of the concrete shear resistance Vc. With the new method, the member height, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the normal stress now influence the shear strength, Vc. This article describes the shear design updates, and the application is demonstrated using an example.
Silos are used as large containers for storage of bulk materials such as agricultural products or source materials as well as intermediates of industrial production. The structural engineering of such structures requires a precise knowledge of the stresses due to particulate solids in the building structure. The standard EN 1991‑4 "Actions on Silos and Tanks" [1] provides the general principles and requirements for determining these actions.
The time-dependent stress losses from creeping, shrinkage, and relaxation have to be considered when designing prestressed concrete components. The consideration of relaxation losses when designing prestressed concrete in RF-TENDON and RF-TENDON Design is discussed in detail in the following text.
For the serviceability limit state design according to Section 6.6 of Eurocode EN 1997‑1, settlement has to be calculated for spread foundations. RF-/FOUNDATION Pro allows you to perform the settlement calculation for a single foundation. For this, you can chose between an elastic and a solid foundation. By defining a soil profile, it is possible to consider several soil layers under the foundation base. The results of the settlement, foundation tilting, and vertical soil contact stress distribution are displayed graphically and in tables to provide a quick and clear overview of the calculation performed. In addition to the design of the foundation settlement in RF-/FOUNDATION Pro, the structural analysis determines the representative spring constants for the support and can be exported to the structural model of RFEM or RSTAB.
Singularities occur in a limited area due to the concentration of the stress-dependent result values. They are conditioned by the FEA methodology. In theory, the stiffness and/or the stress in an infinite size concentrate on an infinitesimally small area.
The efficient design of prestressed structural components requires a few additional steps that go beyond the standard reinforced concrete design, from modeling tendons to the calculation of equivalent loads to the cross-section resistance design. Therefore, it is important that the software for prestressed concrete design is structured and the navigation is possible in the program. RFEM 5 with the two add-on modules RF-TENDON and RF-TENDON Design meets these needs and allows the engineer to fully design prestressed beams, frames, plates, buildings, and bridges according to EN 1992-1-1 with National Annexes and SIA 262.
Piping systems are exposed to a variety of loads. One of the most decisive is internal pressure. This article will, therefore, deal with the stresses and deformations resulting from a pure internal compression load in the pipe wall or for the pipe.
When modeling surface models, such as a frame joint or similar structures, there is always the question of how to model a prestressed bolt connection. In this case, it is always necessary to find a compromise between the practicable and detailed solution. The following article describes the modeling procedure of such a connection, based on the joint diagram calculation method.
For suspension cranes, the bottom chord of the runway girder is subjected to local flange bending due to the wheel loads in addition to the main load-bearing capacity. The bottom chord behaves like a slab due to these local bending stresses, and has a biaxial stress condition [1].
Utilize the RF-/STEEL Cold-Formed Sections module extension to perform ultimate limit state designs of cold-formed sections according to EN 1993-1-3 and EN 1993-1-5. In addition to the cold-formed cross-sections from the cross-section database, you can design general cross-sections from SHAPE-THIN.
